The SHARISM FORUM will be held in Shanghai on October 22nd as part of the opening day of the arts and culture festival Get It Louder 2010. Our one-day symposium will feature thinkers, practitioners and activists whose work concerns and shapes the global movement of a new sharing culture, which has been unified under the ideology of SHARISM. The public at large is invited to join and to become a "shareholder" of this movement. The event will spark calls-to-action and demonstrate new modalities and technologies of sharing.

About Sharism
SHARISM is a Mind Revolution: The more you give, the more you get. The more you share, the more you are shared. Sharism is an ideology for our Internet Age. It is a philosophy piped through the human and technological networks of Free and Open Source software. It is the motivation behind every piece of User-Generated Content. It is the pledge of Creative Commons, to share, remix and give credit to the latest and greatest of our cultural creations. Sharism is also a mental practice that anyone can try, a daily act that beckons a future of increased social intelligence. It should not go unnoticed that a superabundance of community respect and social capital are being accumulated by precisely those who share.
Sharism is operative in the very workings of the human mind. Our model of the functional mechanism of the nervous system shows it to be one which shares activity and information via interconnected networks of neurons through patterns of feedback. This has profound implications for the creative process. Whenever you have an intention to create, you will find it easier to generate more creative ideas if you keep the sharing process firmly in mind. You can engineer a process of creative feedback to generate even more ideas in return.
The rapid emergence of social applications that can communicate and cooperate are allowing more and more people to output content from one service to another in a creative ecosystem. This interconnectedness spreads memes through multiple online social networks, which can reach a global audience and position social media as a true alternative to broadcast media. These new technologies are reviving Sharism in our closed culture. The missing pieces are open source hardware and software services that enable true freedom from top to bottom in the entire communication stack.
One legal concern is that any loss of control over copyright will lead to noticeable deficits in personal wealth, or loss of creative freedom. But today's sharing environment is more protected than you might think. Many new social applications make it easy to set terms-of-use along your sharing path (such as selecting Creative Commons licenses or privacy settings). Any infringement of those terms will be challenged not just by the law, but by your community. Your audience, who benefit form your sharing, can also be the gatekeepers of your rights.
Through emergent mobile communications technologies, we can generate higher connectivities and increase the throughput of our social links. The more open and strongly connected we are, the better the sharing environment will be for all people. The more collective our intelligence, the wiser our actions will be.
Sharism promises to be the politics of the next global superpower. It will not be a country, but a new human network joined by social software. We can integrate our current and emerging democratic systems with new collaborative technologies, which will allow us to query, share and remix information for the public benefit. The future of democracy is real-time, and always online. Sharism is the inspiration that brings it all together.

SESSION 2: THE FREEDOM STACK

This session will take us on a deep dive into the Freedom Stack. We can conceptualize each component of the Internet as a separate layer, from the physical infrastructure, to online services and mobile devices, to digital goods and the legal mechanisms that allow sharing.
The Freedom Stack envisions introducing free and open source technologies throughout the Internet's infrastructure, which are essential for opening up the true potential of global communications. All speakers in this session have had a significant hand in opening parts of the stack which are currently the most proprietary, such as copyright, patents, network services, and the hardware industry.

Sharism: Open Up a New World, 分享主义：打开一个新世界
Our age has opened up a vast division between the physical world and the world of information, a gap that has brought nothing but confusion to daily life. But now new technologies, such as geo-tagging and spatially-aware web services, are closing the gap by transforming our society into one that is real-time and information-rich.
Under the mantle of a new philosophy called Sharism, we welcome all of society to harvest information and social capital for the public benefit and their own. With the help of new web technologies, we can all learn, play and innovate together. Sharism presents a viable path to a highly interconnected world, wherein each individual can come to sense the spirit of the maxim that "the more you share, the more you get."
More and more netizens are using social media to express themselves and build better social connectivities. People now value social capital more than ever before. We are opening our own lives and creations, and sharing and re-mixing those of our global community. Our sharing activity is weaving a web above and beyond the world of centralized media. The future of commerce and creativity depends upon us.

Successful Sharing at Mozilla Created Firefox
Mozilla is a public benefit organization dedicated to improving the Internet experience for people everywhere. It is a community of millions of people who have joined together to create, share and improve great open source software. The Mozilla community consists of 100+ global contributor communitivisiblees, 1000+ code contributors, tens of thousands of testers, designers, and writers, and 400 million regular users. Students in 1400 institutions in 77 countries spread Firefox as Mozilla campus representatives. This great community effort has resulted in Firefox taking 25% of worldwide browser market share away from Microsoft, and gaining a dominating presence in many countries such as Germany and Indonesia. This talk describes the fundamental principles guiding the Mozilla community, and the innovative ways in which Mozilla operates that makes this success possible.

Citizen Journalism and the Revolutionary Scene of the Netizen
In recent years, there emerges a vigorous group of people who don’t have jobs with news organizations but are performing a similar function. We call them citizen journalists; and we can see they are very active in some well-known new media events in China. On the one hand, they are leveraging various new media tools to record and spread information, to reveal the truth, and to lend voice to the voiceless; on the other hand, they raise serious challenges to traditional journalism practice and news values. In the end, citizen journalism in China will encounter triple barriers: strict supervision of journalists by the state will certify the illegal status of citizen journalists; journalists in the traditional media will adopt an exclusionary attitude towards citizen journalists in order to protect their turf; and people’s eager desire to ask journalists to help them solve problems and address grievances might well lead to a credibility gap for citizen journalism.

Building the Federated Social Web with Status.Net, Diaspora, Google and You!
We don't think twice about calling a friend in London from another phone anywhere on the planet. Right now, you cannot make a status update in Twitter and have it automatically be received by another service like Facebook or Linked-In, without some magical API connection that is custom implemented by each service. This presentation discusses the OStatus standard - a protocol stack involving Salmon, Webfinger, ActivityStreams, and PubSubHubbub - that open source social messaging service StatusNet, the decentralized new kids on the block Diaspora, Google Buzz, Facebook and more are using now to build simple federated connectivity on the open web.

The Sharing of Mobility and the Mobility of Sharing: Beyond Class Boundaries
The great social transformation brought by the spread of mobile devices has been celebrated since at least 2002 with Howard Rheingold's book Smart Mobs. Yet since at least 2003, Korean and Japanese researchers have been arguing that mobile communication actually leads to the narrowing-down of network scope and more social immobility, which was echoed in the US by Sunstein's Republic.com 2.0. In this talk, I maintain that the optimistic and pessimistic approaches are both valid -- and limited -- in their own ways; and that a key to reconciling the two is to consider activities of sharing beyond class boundaries. Data and observations from China's booming mobile communication market will be discussed, especially with regard to the sharing of information and entertainment content among migrant workers. Future challenges will be identified for the materialization of a truly revolutionary social transformation in China and the world.

Clash of the Encyclopedias: Is Competition Good for Sharing?
One of the benefits of the open web is that good ideas can flourish easily. In the Chinese speaking web, the idea of an online encyclopedia has been especially fruitful. With the Chinese Wikipedia enjoying its eighth birthday this month, it’s worth examining whether the fragmentation of efforts ultimately leads to a better product and bigger communities, or if the “us vs them” mentality is harmful to sharing.

The Science of Sharing: Sharism as a Way of Life
Sharism is about sharing ideas, but what is an idea? In the material world of objects, sharing physical goods is fairly well understood. But in the realm of the mind, what is being shared? In the material world, there are laws of nature that govern how matter behaves. But what are the forces in the realm of the mind? What is the relationship between the mental realm and the material world? How does this relationship between mind and matter relate to the current world situation? Sharism as an "attitude" and a "way of life" offers a solution to many of the problems that we face today.

A Public Service & Identity Built on a Vision of Sharing
DotAsia envisions a TLD domain registry to be a shared resource, shared service and a shared identity online. From the beginning, the ".Asia" domain was developed with a strong community aspect. The essence and success of the ".Asia" domain depended on a shared concept. Being a shared resource does not necessarily mean being free. The economic value derived is shared back into the community. DotAsia has supported a variety of community initiatives, including OLPC (olpc.asia), Creative Commons (creativecommons.asia), Paragon 100 (paragon100.asia), and many others. The presentation will explore why we believe our vision and culture of sharing is important to the sustainability and development of .Asia and our various initiatives.

This talk will explore how new information technologies are accelerating this dynamic and opening up new modalities for art journalism. It will also discuss Ai Weiwei's latest work, "Sunflower Seeds" at Tate Modern, and works by Felix Gonzalez Torres, in the context of Sharing Culture.

Get It Louder and Sharism in the Art Scene
In this year's GIL, Fu Xiaodong interprets "Sharism"-related works in five aspects: 1. Works that share a innovative, effective, and pragmatic value system; 2. Works that are relevant to daily life and the mundane objects, where elements of basic human needs abound; 3. Works that reflect inter-connectivity--rather than parallels--among individuals, as well as communal relationships, communities, and Neo-Collectivism; 4. Works that proliferates, works that are public, fair, and can be widely spread and open to all; 5. Works with a "knock-off" attitude that opposes the monopolization of resources by cultural elites, deconstructs and parodies classics, manipulates forms, and revives something old in new disguise. Works that vulgarize the classics, promote the popular culture, legalize the illegal, and subvert the power infrastructure governed by signs. The political dynamics generated when the old is replaced by the new will provide ample opportunities for the grass-roots to participate in culture and politics. This opportunity occurs when the mainstream control relaxes, which ushers in a new era full of possibilities of subversion and replacement in cultural realms.

The text for each participant should be around 200 English words (300 Chinese words), and should include 100 words on their bio, and other 100 words on their participating project for 2010GIL).
Isaac Mao (毛向辉)
Isaac Mao is a venture capitalist, pioneering blogger, software architect, entrepreneur and researcher in learning and social technology. He is the Venture Partner of Neuron VC and Director of the Social Brain Foundation, and advises Global Voices Online and several Web 2.0 businesses. Isaac co-founded CNBlog.org and co-organizes the Chinese Blogger Conference (CNBloggerCon). He also serves as director of the Shanghai Youth Development Foundation
Isaac is a regular keynote speaker at business and technology conferences around the globe, and has contributed to numerous commercial software projects. He earned a BS degree in Computer Science and followed an MBA training program at Shanghai Jiaotong University. From 2008 to 2009 Isaac was a Fellow at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

As an activist, he founded U-thèque, an independent film and video organization; As an editor and graphic designer, he is known for his seminal book New Sound of Beijing; As a curator, he initiated the biennale exhibition Get It Louder (2005, 2007) and launched the sound project in China Power Station, co-organized by Serpentine Gallery and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art; As an artist, he is known for the urban research projects such as San Yuan Li, commissioned by 50th Biennale di Venezia (2003), and Da Zha Lan, commissioned by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Hu Yong (胡泳)
Hu Yong is associate professor at Peking University’s School of Journalism and Communication, and a well-known new media critic and Chinese Internet pioneer.
Before joining the faculty of Peking University, Hu Yong worked for a number of media sources, including China Daily, Lifeweek, China Internet Weekly and China Central Television. He is a co-founder of the Digital Forum of China, a nonprofit advocating a free and responsible Internet, as well as Chinavalue.net, a leading new media business in China.
Hu Yong is a founding director of the Communication Association of China (CAC) and China New Media Communication Association (CNMCA). His publications include Internet: The King Who Rules，and The Rising Cacophony: Personal Expression and Public Discussion in the Internet Age. He has translated several groundbreaking books on digital technology, including Nicholas Negroponte's Being Digital, Esther Dyson's Release 2.0 and Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody. In 2000, Hu Yong was nominated for China’s list of top Internet industry figures.

Li Gong (宫力)
Li Gong is Chairman and CEO of Mozilla Online Ltd, the Beijing-based subsidiary of the Mozilla Corporation, the producer of the Firefox internet browser. He was Venture Partner and Head of China Office for the US venture firm Bessemer Venture Partners until 2009. He previously held positions as General Manager of MSN China at Microsoft, and General Manager of Sun Microsystems’s R&D center in China. He has co-written 3 books (published by Addison Wesley and O'Reilly) and numerous technical articles, and has received 14 US patents. Li Gong has worked as a research scientist at ORA and Stanford Research Institute (SRI), has held visiting positions at Cornell and Stanford Universities, and served as Guest Chair Professor at Tsinghua University. He has served as both Program Chair and General Chair for IEEE S&P, ACM CCS, and IEEE CSFW. Li Gong received BS and MS degrees from Tsinghua University, Beijing, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, all in computer science.

Matt Hope
Matt Hope was born in London in 1976. As a teenager he spent his spare time mixing electronic music and building homemade speaker systems from discarded furniture and industrial scrap. He later built sound systems and performed as a DJ with the group Vox Populi. Matt Hope holds a degree in Fine Art Sculpture from the Winchester School of Art and an MFA in Fine Art from the University of California, San Diego, and is a certified structural welder. Edmon is an inventor of patents underlying technologies for internationalized domain names (IDN) and email addresses on the Internet. Liu Yan is CEO/Co-founder of Xindanwei. She is also an advocate of cross-culture and cross discipline exchange, entrepreneur and community organizer. Philip Tinari (b. 1979) is editor-in-chief of LEAP, a bilingual, bimonthly magazine of contemporary Chinese art and culture based in Beijing and published by Modern Media Group. Since 2007, he has also run the publishing imprint, editorial office, and translation studio Office for Discourse Engineering. Tinari is a contributing editor to Artforum and adjunct professor of art criticism at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He serves as China advisor to Art Basel and worked previously as academic consultant to the Chinese contemporary art department at Sotheby's. He has written and lectured widely on contemporary art in China, for publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Magazine, Parkett, and Dushu. Recent projects include the book Hans Ulrich Obrist: The China Interviews (2009) and the exhibition The Hong Kong Seven, mounted by the Fondation Louis Vuitton at the Hong Kong Museum of Art last year. A resident of Beijing for much of the past decade, he holds an A.M. in East Asian studies from Harvard, a B.A. from the Literature Program at Duke, and was Fulbright fellow at Peking University.

Fu Xiaodong (付晓东)
Fu Xiaodong is an independent curator and young critic based in Beijing. She is the Art Director of Space Station – an art center founded by her in 2009 to promote experimental art programs – and the Executive Chief Editor of the magazine – Fine Arts Literature. She once taught in the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art and worked as an editor for many professional art magazines, such as Mei Yuan, Contemporary Art News and Art China. She was also the Art Director of T Space in Beijing. Since 2003, she has organized several contemporary art exhibitions for art museums, art centers, galleries and other art institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, including: "Homesickness - Memory and Virtual Reality", "Chinese Freedom : Contemporary Artistic Text in the Post-Totalitarianism Society”, ”NEW VISTA - The Phenomenon of Post-Tradition in Contemporary Art", “New Interface”, ”Removing The Ladder”, “Insomnia” photographs exhibition, “Blackboard”, “Out of Love”, and others. In addition, she has been writing for various medias and been invited to be the judge for several international young artists competitions. Fu Xiaodong was born in Shenyang in 1977. She graduated from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art with a master degree and then went to study Art History and Theory in China Central Academy of Fine Arts. she is working on the “Triennial of Fine Arts Literature” and the contemporary art section of “Get it louder”.
